Yorkshire voluntary sector leader Jamie Lewis has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Honours for his outstanding services to communities across the region.

Jamie Lewis, Chief Executive of the HEY Smile Foundation, has been recognised for his longstanding contribution to strengthening the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector, supporting grassroots organisations and building partnerships that benefit communities across Yorkshire.

His journey into leadership has been shaped by his own lived experience of the care system, which he says continues to influence his work today.

“It’s incredibly humbling to receive this honour,” Jamie said. “But this recognition isn’t just about me - it reflects the collective effort of so many individuals, organisations and communities working together across Yorkshire.”

Over a number of years, Jamie has become a leading strategic voice within the region’s voluntary sector. His leadership at the HEY Smile Foundation has played a central role in strengthening community infrastructure, supporting grassroots groups and improving collaboration across the region.

At the HEY Smile Foundation, his leadership has played a key role in enabling smaller, grassroots organisations to thrive while strengthening connections across the sector.

Speaking about his motivation, Jamie added: “My experiences have always driven me to make sure others have access to the opportunities and support they need. At its heart, this work is about people - helping communities feel empowered and able to thrive.”

The award comes at a time when charities and voluntary organisations are facing growing demand for services alongside increasing financial pressures. Across Yorkshire and the UK, many groups are being asked to deliver more complex support with limited resources.

Jamie has been a strong advocate for collaboration and new ways of working to address these challenges.

“We know the pressures the sector is under,” he said. “That’s why collaboration and innovation are so important. By working together, sharing knowledge and building partnerships, we can create more sustainable support for our communities.”

He has consistently championed the importance of trust, long-term thinking and collective action in tackling social challenges, helping to build a more connected and resilient voluntary sector across the region.

Looking ahead, Jamie said his focus remains firmly on supporting communities and strengthening the sector.

Chair of Trustees at the HEY Smile Foundation, Trish Dalby, said, “Jamie’s recognition is both a celebration of his outstanding contribution and a moment of pride for the charity and the communities it serves. His leadership has strengthened the Foundation, expanded its reach and impact, and shines a light on the incredible work taking place across local communities every day, as Smile remains firmly committed to collaboration, innovation and a stronger future for the voluntary sector.”

The MBE recognises both his past contributions and his ongoing commitment to inclusive community development across Yorkshire.
