Humber’s Net Zero Ambition Takes Centre Stage at Innovation Zero 2025

8 May 2025

Humber returned to Innovation Zero 2025 with a strong and coordinated presence, aiming to highlight the region’s vital role in the UK’s net zero transition. With major projects already underway and significant private investment lined up, the message was clear: Humber is not just participating in the energy transition, it’s helping to lead it.

As the UK’s largest carbon-emitting industrial cluster, Humber represents both a significant challenge and an even greater opportunity. With a concentration of energy assets, a strong industrial base and a growing pipeline of investment-ready projects, the region is well positioned to deliver large-scale decarbonisation and drive sustainable economic growth.

Led by Future Humber, fifteen organisations came together at the heart of Olympia London to present a bold and unified vision for the region’s low-carbon future. Anchored by the striking four-metre-high Humber Pavilion at the venue’s main entrance, the collective presence served as a clear statement of intent.

Digital screens featured a wide range of transformational projects. From hydrogen production and carbon capture to port infrastructure and inward investment, delegates from across the globe were able to see the scale and interconnected nature of Humber’s energy transition.

On-Pavilion talks and presentations offered further insight, showcasing the practical steps being taken by businesses and partners across the region. These sessions demonstrated that collaboration is at the core of Humber’s approach, and that the foundations for long-term change are already in place.

The region has access to the majority of the UK’s licensed carbon storage capacity, is expected to exceed five gigawatts of hydrogen production by 2030 and is developing energy storage infrastructure that will support long-term resilience. Its ports handle more cargo than any other region in the UK, and its renewable energy systems can supply a significant share of the nation’s power needs.

With more than £15 billion of private investment ready to be deployed, Humber’s decarbonisation journey is not a distant goal. It is happening now.

To unlock its full potential, continued collaboration between industry, government and education is vital. Skills providers and employers across the region are already adapting to meet the demands of a growing low-carbon economy. A long-term, coordinated approach will be essential to building talent pipelines and securing future opportunities.

Innovation Zero 2025 offered Humber a global stage to demonstrate its strengths, ambitions and growing influence in the net zero space. The message was clear: this region is not only ready to lead the UK’s green industrial revolution but is also positioning itself as a global leader, low-carbon innovation and industrial decarbonisation.

Humber’s transformation has the potential to deliver lasting economic, environmental and social benefits — not just for the region, but for the UK and beyond.
