It’s almost the weekend, and here is some extra news from around the Humber that we’ve seen and loved this week. In a week that has seen local council elections, Star Wars Day, Coronation chat and lots of catching up after the last bank holiday weekend, we are taking a look at the fun, weird, and wonderful things that have been going on recently.

THE POWER OF HUMPS

Could road compression be the answer to our energy needs? A firm in North Lincolnshire is developing technology which harnesses road movements to generate electricity. A trial is soon to be run in Grimsby and, if successful, will be rolled out across the UK. A fine example of the Humber region leading the way in decarbonisation.

PARKING TO POTATOES

A totally different way of using traffic infrastructure to further sustainability, a Grimsby car park has been transformed into a vegetable garden to benefit the local community. We look forward to seeing the fruits of the community group’s labour.

TEENY TRAINSPOTTING

Local school children were treated to a trip to Siemens Mobility’s new factory in Goole where they took part in a model building event. The Primary Engineer Rail Programme harnesses the power of rail professionals to inspire the next generation of engineers, and Siemens Mobility have been working with local schools through school visits and a visit to their factory.

LEVELLING-UP AND POPPING UP

Levelling-up funding has been provided to support a new pop-up arts venue on Hull’s Fruit Market. Managed by Wykeland Beal, the grant will enable refurbishments to be made and create a new community facility for those working in the arts in the Hull and Humber region.

ONE’S MILKSHAKE BRINGS ALL THE SUBJECTS TO ONE’S YARD

The UK’s got Coronation fever and here in the Humber, one of the UK’s premier food producing regions, we have got in on the act with Coronation Milkshake. The Milk Well in Willerby, East Yorkshire has produced three milk flavours inspired by the Coronation. Have you tried one yet?

TIME FOR A CRAFTY PINT?

In more Coronation news, The Boot and Slipper in Barmby Moor near Pocklington has on display a huge model of King Charles created by a local group of crafters. If you want to have a look, it will be there until the end of the month. Great work!
