TEC Partnership launches new specialist degree for fast-growing education sector
5 June 2025
The TEC Partnership has added a new FdEd Specialist Teaching Assistant foundation degree to its course offering at the University Centre Grimsby and East Riding College.

The new programme was created to address the growing regional and national needs of the education sector. Schools, post-16 training and education providers, and specialist settings are facing increasing demands to support students with diverse and complex learning needs, as well as implementing expanding curriculums and promoting community inclusion.
Graduates from this specialist programme are specifically trained to meet these challenges. Students on the foundation degree have a choice of three pathways: special educational needs and disability, social and emotional wellbeing, or curriculum provision.
Students of this foundation degree will develop a deeper understanding of how children and young people learn, gain hands-on experience through placements, and obtain a nationally recognised qualification that is respected by employers across the UK.
Anna Williams, Head of Higher Education for East Riding College, said:
“This degree offers a structured and recognised route into the fulfilling profession of a specialist teaching assistant, rather than relying solely on less formal qualifications or on-the-job experience.
“It is ideal for those aspiring to work in an educational setting, parents returning to work who have experience supporting their own children’s learning, or existing teaching assistants seeking professional development.”
The Specialist Teaching Assistant foundation degree can be studied full-time, part-time, or as part of an apprenticeship route. Apprenticeships are supported by employers in the industry, providing hands-on experience and professional connections with experienced practitioners. Lessons are also delivered either in person or virtually, with one evening session per module per week, fitting perfectly around students’ busy lifestyles.
The course is available from September 2025, and applications are now open.
