Industry Insight shines a spotlight on world-leading healthcare innovation in Humber

16 July 2026

Business leaders from across Humber were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK's most advanced medical research facilities this week, as Future Humber and Daisy Appeal welcomed Bondholders to the Molecular Imaging Research Centre (MIRC).

The Industry Insight showcased how collaboration between Daisy Appeal, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust GE HealthCare is helping position Humber as a centre for internationally significant healthcare research and innovation.

Guests toured the specialist facility, including the cyclotron suite, research laboratories and PET-CT centre, gaining first-hand insight into the pioneering work taking place to improve the diagnosis and understanding of diseases such as cancer, dementia and heart disease.

While the technology itself was remarkable, the morning also highlighted something much broader: the role collaboration plays in creating long-term social and economic value for the region.

Facilities such as MIRC are not only improving healthcare outcomes for patients, but are also attracting investment, supporting highly skilled jobs, strengthening research partnerships and reinforcing Humber's reputation as a place where innovation thrives.

That long-term impact extends beyond today's breakthroughs. Attendees also heard the exclusive announcement of Daisy Appeal's new Young Scientist Award, an initiative designed to inspire the next generation of scientists while strengthening links between education, business and healthcare. By encouraging young people to explore careers in science and innovation, the award demonstrates that building Humber's future is not only about investing in world-class facilities, but also in the talent that will drive the region forward for decades to come.

Speaking during the visit, Louis Allott, Director of Radiochemistry at Daisy Appeal, said:

“What we have developed is something truly significant for our region. It is unique in its aims and ethos, with comparable facilities only found in cities such as London or Edinburgh.

“We are delighted to have joined the Bondholders scheme and to welcome members here today. Their support will help us raise awareness of our world-class facility across the region and throughout the UK.”

The event also demonstrated the value of connecting businesses with the organisations shaping the region's future.

Alex Caruso, Managing Director at Alessandro Caruso Architects, said:

"It's been a great experience to have access to a facility so important for the region, but also for the UK. There is so much talent and so many skills available in the region, and opportunities like this help connect people with that expertise."

For Future Humber, Industry Insights form part of a wider commitment to championing Humber by bringing organisations together around the ideas, partnerships and opportunities shaping the region.

Olly Burdett, Marketing Manager at Future Humber, said:

"Every organisation has a story, but together those stories create the identity of a place. One of Future Humber's roles is to help bring those stories to life, connecting businesses with the organisations, people and innovations shaping Humber's future.

“Yesterday wasn't simply about opening the doors to an incredible facility. It was about building greater confidence in our region by showcasing the ambition, expertise and collaboration that exists here. Every conversation, every connection and every partnership helps strengthen Humber's reputation as a place where people, businesses and ideas can thrive."

By opening the doors to organisations rarely seen by the public, Industry Insights continue to strengthen understanding of the innovation, expertise and partnerships that are helping shape Humber's future.
