Free Fish and Chips Served Up for Charity in Hull

28 May 2026

Smales and Sailors’ Children’s Society are bringing a taste of the seaside back to Hull city centre this National Fish and Chip Day, with a huge fundraising celebration planned for Friday 5 June in Queen’s Gardens.

Taking place in the Rose Bowl on the same day as Business Day in Bridlington, the event promises fish and chips, free ice cream, lawn games and plenty of seaside fun, all while raising vital funds for children and families from seafaring backgrounds facing crisis across the UK.

Freshly cooked fish and chips will be available from 11.30am until 2pm, cooked on the day by Mr Roberts Mobile Fish and Chips of Hull. Guests will be able to enjoy fish and chips in return for a donation to Sailors’ Children’s Society, with bigger donations unlocking even more prizes throughout the day.

Alongside limited-edition chip forks and Hull’s famous chip spice, attendees could also win incredible prizes, including the top prize of a two-night stay at Lavinia House in Whitby alongside a £100 voucher for a meal at The Fisherman’s Wife on Khyber Pass.

Businesses are also getting behind the event, with Chippy Chat Magazine and PG Chips donating the potatoes for the day, while free ice cream will be provided by Hull Whippy. Wilson’s Seasonings have also donated 300 tubs of Chip Spice to be given away on the day. Every donation made throughout the event will go directly towards supporting children and families from seafaring backgrounds who are facing crisis across the UK.

The event follows a hugely successful year of fundraising initiatives led by Smales, which have raised more than £30,000 for Sailors’ Children’s Society while bringing together businesses across the fishing and seafood sectors.

The money raised helps support children and families connected to the fishing, offshore, Royal Navy, and Merchant Navy industries who are facing financial hardship, bereavement, or crisis. This has included Christmas campaigns that provide food vouchers to families facing the very real choice between heating and eating during the winter months.

Bobby Joyce, Sales and Marketing Director at Smales, said:

“National Fish and Chip Day is always a brilliant opportunity to celebrate our industry, but more importantly, it’s about coming together to support families who need us most.

“We’re incredibly proud to continue supporting Sailors’ Children’s Society and the amazing work they do for seafaring families across the UK. The response from businesses over the last year has been fantastic and we’re excited to build on that momentum with another really special day in Hull.”

Rio Beeson, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Sailors’ Children’s Society, added:

“We’re incredibly grateful to Smales for once again getting behind the charity and helping bring the fishing and maritime industries together to support our families.

“We are continuing to see demand increase across the families we support. The knock-on impact of UK fishing quotas continues to affect local trawler families, while rising energy and oil prices linked to global conflict are pushing household costs to levels many families simply cannot keep up with, particularly during an ongoing cost of living crisis.

“Events like this are so important because they not only raise vital funds, they also raise awareness of the challenges many seafaring families are currently facing.”

National Fish and Chip Day is celebrated by businesses and communities across the UK each year, recognising one of the nation’s favourite dishes while also shining a spotlight on the fishing and seafood industries that support it.
