When choosing a new place to live, there is so much to consider. If you have a family, then relocating may mean you will need to think about education provision for your children and young people.

The Humber region is a great place for bringing up a family. There’s a huge range of family-friendly activities to do, lower than average property prices, and jobs available for all ages in thriving industries. The educational landscape is booming too. With nurseries and pre-schools, primary and secondary schools of all kinds, vocational FE colleges, established HE institutions, and a host of private training providers, the Humber is strong when it comes to education and training.

In the brochure, there is more information about what is available in the Humber. Here is a taster of what you will learn about education in the region. 

1 – All areas have a great offering of good schools and colleges 

For unknown reasons, the education landscape in the Yorkshire and Humber area hasn’t always enjoyed a good reputation, but we don’t really know why; the schools and colleges in this area are actually pretty good. We have a top-class university in The University of Hull which draws in thousands of students from all around the world year on year, and we have some fantastic further education colleges including the exceptional agricultural college Bishop Burton College. 

All local education authority areas have a high proportion of primary schools being classed as good or outstanding by Ofsted – 96% of all primary schools in North East Lincolnshire, for example. All four LEAs are above the national average of 88%  

All LEAs have a wide variety of nurseries, primary schools, and secondary schools. The Your Move brochure has links to websites so you can search for a school in your chosen area.  

If you think that the Humber area is behind educationally, then you need to take a closer look.  

St Mary's College in Hull was named Comprehensive of the Year for 2023 by The Times and Sunday Times. That's out of all comprehensive schools in the whole of the UK!

2 – The choice of schools and colleges is incredible 

In the region, there are not only a large number of schools and colleges but also a huge choice in the type of establishment available.  

If you prefer an independent or private school, then we have these in both the north and the south of the Humber including Tranby in Anlaby, Hymers Hessle Mount and Hymers College in Hull, Pocklington School, St James’ School and St Martins Preparatory in Grimsby and The Children’s House in Stallingborough.  

For a more diverse educational experience, there are numerous secondary schools and colleges which have more of a focus on vocational education, including the two UTCs – Ron Dearing UTC in Hull and Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire in Scunthorpe. Both prepare students for the world of work in the engineering, technical and digital industries that the Humber is known for.  

Hull College is one of only a handful of colleges around the UK to offer career focused education to 14- to 16-year-olds as well as post-16, and higher education to masters' level. John Leggott College and North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe both offer post-16 education as well as adult courses. 

If you or your child fancies something a bit more earthy, then the world renowned Bishop Burton College near Beverley provides FE and HE in subjects such as farming and agriculture, education and childcare, public services, sport, and floristry.  

3 – The learning doesn’t stop at the age of 18  

Aside from the world-class The University of Hull and its long history, there are also plenty of other institutions to keep you busy and learning past the age of 18. University Campus North Lincolnshire offers post-18 education, as do Bishop Burton College and Hull College. 

Institutes such as CATCH in Stallinborough provide specialist training in energy, engineering, and renewable energy, and Modal Training Centre in Immingham is a centre of excellence for maritime, logistics, and safety training.  

There are also numerous adult education centers across the region as well as specialist private training providers in whatever industry sector you work in.
