When choosing a new place to live, there is so much to consider. Whether you are moving alone or with a whole brood to keep fed and watered, you will be reassured to know that your new home has access to good food and drink for those times you really don’t fancy cooking, need to entertain visiting family and old friends, or to meet with new ones.

The Humber is a hotspot for food production and processing, and this does have a positive impact on the drinks and dining scene. The region is not only famous for Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Puddings, Chip Spice, patty butties, and lots and lots of fish but also for the range of quality dining and drinks options available. We have everything from the famous chain restaurants to independent bars and bistros, which include home-grown foods as well as foods from all around the world. Anyone coming to this part of the world expecting a sub-par dining scene is going to be pleasantly surprised. And yes, we do have Michelin starred restaurants here!  

Particularly good for food lovers is Hull’s Humber Street which is home to a dozen restaurants, cafes and bars ideal for evening or daytime dining. Positioned adjacent to Hull Marina, it’s often packed out on a summer’s day and is a great place for people-watching as well as discovering some fantastic food and drink.  

Not far away is the town of Beverley, which is one of the most densely populated towns in the UK, for pubs anyway! There is a thriving nighttime economy here and a fantastic range of independent cafes and bistros for dining at all times of the day and night. A visit is well recommended.  

If fine dining and cocktails are not your style, then it’s a quick drive to the coast for some of the best fish and chips in the world. There’s not a lot to top eating fish and chips with a wooden fork while watching the tide come in.

Winteringham Fields, North Lincolnshire 

In a 16th century former farmhouse, a short walk from the south bank of the Humber, Winteringham Fields is one of the clutch of Michelin starred restaurants in the region. Expect fine but unfussy food in stunning surroundings. It has a high rating on Trip Advisor with reviewers describing the restaurant as ‘exceptional’, a ‘hidden gem’ and well deserving of its Michelin star.

Papa’s Fish and Chip Restaurant 

Regularly winning national awards, Papa’s fish and chip shop is a well-loved feature of the Humber. Papa’s has eleven restaurants across the UK with four in the Humber region including the ‘UK’s biggest fish and chip restaurant’ on Cleethorpes Pier. Learn more at https://papasfishandchips.com/  

Mark Wade, Human Resources Manager at Phillips 66 would like to nominate Steels Cornerhouse in Cleethorpes as the best place to get fish and chips but there is plenty of competition for this title; there are fish and chip shops and restaurants galore in the Humber. If you haven’t already, then you have to sample a patty - it’s a must-do experience for anyone new to the region.  

Did you know? - The Times named Whiteheads in Hornsea, East Yorkshire as the best fish and chip shop in the UK of 2023 having also won the title at the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards. Lighthouse Fisheries of Flamborough also made the list at number 9 and Steel’s Corner House Restaurant, Cleethorpes came in at number 12.

Hotham’s Gin School and Distillery, Hull city centre 

If you’re a fan of getting more hands-on and learning about alcohol as well as drinking it, then Hotham’s Gin School and Distillery is for you. They not only sell their own range of gins, vodkas, and rums but also provide unique experiences where you can make your own tipple to take home. Highly recommended!  

Set in a lovely old building on Hull’s Whitefriargate, this is a great activity for a date night or a group outing.  

Roku Asia, Beverley 

A relatively new restaurant to the Humber food scene, Roku Asia is tapas meets the far east. It’s a culinary experience rather than a quick refuelling. The restaurant environment is amazing, with Asian inspired sumptuous décor throughout. There is a fantastic range of drinks on offer including a Tokyo Mary, which looks to be a Bloody Mary with an Asian twist. Food includes tempura, sushi, seabass, and bok choy. Tasting menu available. This is definitely one for the foodies!

Mr Moody’s Tavern, Hull 

According to Samantha Garrod, UK Partnerships Manager at Connexin Live (formerly Bonus Arena) the best roast dinners are at Mr Moody’s Tavern on Newland Avenue in Hull and we can well believe her. Newland Avenue is home to a lot of superb independent diners and pubs, including Mr Moody’s Tavern, Larkin’s and student favourite The Piper Club. Newland Avenue is student central, being a stone’s throw from The University of Hull. It is home to a range of eateries serving food from all around the world, and it’s good for nightlife too. If you want good food and drink in quirky and trendy surroundings at a reasonable price, then Newland Avenue is worth a visit.
