Hull Truck Theatre are egg-static to present an egg-citing programme of work for audiences this April. From critically acclaimed compelling drama to comedy and family fun – there’s something for everyone to enjoy on stage this Spring.

Don’t miss Animal Farm (Wednesday 27 March – Saturday 13 April) as Ian Woolridge’s adaptation of George Orwell’s novel plays out live on Hull Truck Theatre’s stage. This re-imagined satire about the corruption of power and the beginning of a life of freedom and equality for all will give audiences food for thought. But will one tyranny simply just be replaced by another? Presented in partnership with Octagon Theatre Bolton and Derby Theatre. The show is Directed by esteemed theatre director, Iqbal Khan (East is East - Birmingham Rep & National Theatre, Tartuffe - Royal Shakespeare Company, Opening Ceremony of Commonwealth Games).

From Orwell to Shakespeare, RSC First Encounters will present Romeo & Juliet (Tuesday 9 – Wednesday 10 April). In this 90-minute version of Romeo & Juliet, director Philip J Morris uses an edited version of the original language to create the perfect first introduction for young people aged 7-13 and their families.

Support Hull Truck Theatre’s Young Creators as they present quirky characters and heartfelt moments through Drama with The Dutch Dash (Thursday 18 – Saturday 20 April). This coming-of-age story will speak of survival, friendship and three friends on a mad dash, on the run to Rotterdam.

This Easter, get ready for the most egg-citing Easter egg hunt in town… but this won’t just involve hopping around in the back garden! Get ready to journey across land, air and sea in a bid to crack open the egg-scellent clues to complete your quest. Visit Hull Truck Theatre this April for A Great Easter Adventure (Saturday 30 March, Tuesday 2 April and Wednesday 3 April). The event features an arts and crafts session followed by an interactive play that uses whatever you have made. Designed for children aged 3-6 years old and their families.

Charlotte Denston, Community Partnership Coordinator at Hull Truck Theatre, said:

“This Great Adventures will be a fun event for children aged 3-6 to enjoy a more interactive piece of theatre where they won’t be expected to sit and simply watch a performance. During the show children can join in and shout out suggestions for what characters should do next. This Easter we encourage children to wear their bonnets and join in the celebration of Spring, but don’t worry if you don’t have one, as we will be making some bunny ears that you can wear in our Arts and Crafts session before the show.”

Audiences looking for a night of hilarious comedy, are spoilt for choice this Easter as Hull Truck Theatre welcomes funny, celebratory and critically acclaimed comedians to the stage. Rachel Stockdale presents Fat Chance (Thursday 4 April), a politically powerful one-woman play exploring a true-life experience of weight gain from size 8 to 18. Jessica Fostekew: Mettle (Friday 5 April) recognisable from BBC’S QI, and Live at the Apollo, presents a brand-new stand-up show about passion, pace and purpose. North West’s most punctual working-class comedian Phil Ellis Excellent Comedy Show (Thursday 11 April), one of the top 20 best-reviewed shows of The Fringe, will present an hour of hilarious stand-up and fun. Finally, As seen on Would I Lie To You, Never Mind the Buzzcock’s and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Paul Foot (Friday 26 April) is back on tour with the critically acclaimed show Dissolve, his most personal, surprising and ground-breaking show ever.

Hull Truck Theatre will also be screening the best art and independent cinema from around the world as the Godber Studio hosts a state-of-the-art screen and sound system streaming live broadcasts in partnership with Hull Independent Cinema and Royal Ballet.

Hull Independent Cinema will present The Persian Version (15) (Friday 12 April), about the rebellious New Yorker, Leila who is trying to balance the Iranian and American aspects of her culture and dealing with the cruelty of her mother, who cannot come to terms with Leila being gay. Hull Independent Cinema also shine a light on Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World (18) (Tuesday 23 April). Overworked and underpaid production assistant Angela is assigned to film a workplace safety video for a multinational corporation in Bucharest, but when one of the company’s employees due to be filmed for the video makes a statement that ignites a scandal, Angela must re-invent the story.

Don’t miss encore screening of The Royal Ballet: Swan Lake (Saturday 27 April), what remains to this day one of the best-loved works in the classical ballet canon. Tchaikovsky’s sensational score combines with the evocative imagination of choreographer Liam Scarlett and designer John Macfarlane to heighten the dramatic pathos of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s quintessential ballet classic.

Other events and opportunities in April include First Thursday Theatre Club (Thursday 4 April) where you can join Hull Truck Theatre’s Associate Director, Tom Saunders for a practical exploration of writing monologues in which participants will respond to a range of stimulus and write monologues during the session.

Local, award-winning dance school Street Stars Dance Studio invite you to step into the world of The Street Dance Experience (Saturday 27 April). Bringing their annual production to Hull Truck Theatre for one day and night only, watch as the students showcase their dance talents and be captivated by all the thrills and visuals of a live performance!
