This May, Humber Street Gallery invites you to explore the bizarre and magical side of Hull with an immersive exhibition by artist Jack Pell - Byland’s Super Saga.

  • New Springtime exhibition at Humber Street Gallery explores Hull's rich folk history, industrial heritage and natural landscapes;
  • The exhibition is by Hull-born artist Jack Pell, and features reimagined replicas of several of Hull’s bridges, talking straw puppets and video work;
  • Exhibition Dates: 3 May - 7 July 2024. Launch Event: 2 May, 6-9pm.

Visitors will be able to pull back the curtain into Space 1 to discover the artist’s whimsical world, inspired by the waterways of the Humber in Hull and East Yorkshire, as well as Hull’s social history, folklore, industrial heritage and Pell’s own experience growing up in Hull as a working-class person.

The different pieces in the exhibition combine the recognisable, everyday aspects of a city with the bizarre and magical. From colourful 3D models of some of Hull’s cast iron bridges, to projected sea monsters, video work and talking straw puppets named Wyke and Grim, who take on the characterised personas of Hull and Grimsby respectively. Guests can also use the space’s themed activity table to create their own postcard to take away.

Absolutely Cultured’s Creative Director, Marianne Lewsley-Stier said: “Following on from the success of You and Me in HU3, we continue the theme of exploring the rich creative tapestry of Hull, and we can’t wait to open Byland’s Super Saga up to the public. We love how Jack Pell has placed familiar names and locations from Hull next to fantasy creatures and folklore. It really scratches the creative side of your brain, and we hope visitors will feel the same inspiration.”

Jack Pell said: “Each work in the exhibition has been a learning curve for me. I’ve used new materials, techniques and equipment in every piece in the show, so in a way this is a big experiment, but it’s something I’ve hugely enjoyed.”

Byland’s Super Saga will run from 3 May to 7 July 2024, with a launch party on Thursday 2 May which is open to the public. Humber Street Gallery will also host a programme of events alongside the exhibition, including a Thursday Lates event, exhibition tours, a drop-in screen-printing session and more.
