Cottingham, 10 January 2024 – Local charity and athletics club, Fitmums & Friends is teaming up with Headscarf Pride to host a new event in March: the Headscarf Hustle. Open to all, the Headscarf Hustle is a 4-mile run/walk to raise funds for a statue in honour of Hull's Headscarf Revolutionaries. This year, it will take place across the Humber Bridge.

Fitmums & Friends and Headscarf Pride are delighted to announce that the first Headscarf Hustle will take place at 10am on Sunday 10 March 2024 from the Humber Bridge Country Park in Hessle.

The new event is both an opportunity for people to be active locally and a fundraiser. Ian Cuthbert of Headscarf Pride explains more: “Proceeds from the Headscarf Hustle will go directly to the campaign for a statue in memory of Hull’s Headscarf Revolutionaries – the four local women who fought to improve safety at sea after the Triple Trawler Disaster of 1968, securing change and saving countless lives.”

As with all Fitmums & Friends activities, the 4-mile event will be suitable for everyone – adults and children and all abilities. People are welcome to run, walk or wheel the four miles at their own pace (the event will not be officially timed.) It hopes to see individuals, families and friends all taking part together.

Entry costs £8.00 per person and is free for children under 15 years (who must be accompanied by an adult and booked on to the event).

This year’s event will take place on Mother's Day and two days after International Women’s Day. Sam Barlow BEM, chief officer and founder of Fitmums & Friends, explains why: “We’re excited to see local people coming together to be active and to walk or run a mile in honour of each of the four Headscarf Revolutionaries. Mother’s Day (and International Women’s Day) is the perfect day to celebrate these inspirational women and all the women who make a difference in our lives.”

Fitmums & Friends and Headscarf Pride would like to thank Curly’s Athletes, the Humber Wellbeing Hub and the Humber Bridge Board for their support in making this event happen.
