The colourful history of Hull Olympians will be explored in a talk at the University of Hull.

Since 1908 there have been at least 19 Hull Olympic competitors including marksmen, cyclists, judo champions, swimmers, hammer throwers and of course champion boxer – Luke Campbell who won Gold in 2012.

Researchers have uncovered a proud tradition of athletes in a project for Team GB, which partners with the University and this work will now be shared with the public at a lecture on Tuesday, 9 April.

Dr Catherine Baker, University of Hull Reader in 20th Century History, said: “Every city has its own Olympic story, and after five years working in partnership with Team GB, we're proud to be able to share more of Hull's story and explore how our city has been part of Great Britain's Olympic past.

“We hope to be able to learn even more about the Hull Olympians through working with clubs and communities who remember them in future.”

The University of Hull began a partnership with Team GB in 2019, which was renewed for a further four year’s last year. This research project is one of many opportunities that the University has benefited from since the partnership began. The research, which is helping Team GB showcase its regional diversity, was undertaken by MA History graduate and Student Futures intern Elliott Gibson.

The talk will take place on Tuesday, 9 April, at 6pm, it will be delivered by Dr Baker and Dr Jenny Macleod, from the School of Humanities. All welcome.
