Two North Lindsey College Construction students have played a pivotal role in a major refurbishment project that has revitalised Appleby Frodingham Cricket Club’s clubhouse.
Carly Cassidy and Harvey Nicholaides – who are currently studying a T Level in Surveying and Design for Construction course at the college - have been working with Galliford Try as a part of their work placement hours and assisted on the renovation project from concept to completion.
The project, which has been a cornerstone of community enhancement, saw a £12,500 investment help to install an access ramp, improving accessibility for disabled and elderly visitors. Additionally, the refurbishment introduced a communal deck space, offering picturesque views of the pitch and a comfortable area for families to enjoy matches and unwind.
When asked about her contribution, student Carly said: “It was nice to be involved as it allowed us to put aspects of our course into practice, like design, and we learnt how to overcome problems and difficulties as they arose. It was great to experience each different stage of the project.”
Funded by the YOR4Good initiative, the project saw Galliford Try and its supply chain partners, along with Moortown, G&H, 4Solutions, SDS and Magills, come together to offer labour and materials to complete the refurbishment.
Carmen Wood, Course Leader for the T Level Surveying and Design for Construction at North Lindsey College said: “I’m immensely proud of both Harvey and Carly. This has been a very successful project and a lovely event to be invited too. It was great to see the work that the learners have been involved in come to fruition."
The T Level qualification provides young learners with an opportunity to gain more than 300 hours of hands-on experience in the workplace alongside more traditional classroom-based learning across a two-year period.
Rebecca Caunce, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Galliford Try, praised the students’ contributions at the company:
“Harvey and Carly have now worked with us for almost a year and have had a genuine impact in their time with us. They have led on a mini project, helped with day-to-day site activities, and even delivered independent toolbox talks to subcontractors.
“We are hoping to continue to support Harvey and Carly in their second year of study and beyond.”
