The lecture, presented by the Logistics Institute, is the first in an annual series of public lectures over the next five years and will serve as a forum for academia and industry to focus on the logistics and supply chain opportunities and challenges we face in the region.

This year’s lecture, titled Supply Chain Action for a Net Zero Humber, will feature Professor Alan McKinnon, Professor of Logistics at Kuehne Logistics University, a world-leading expert in logistics and supply chain management decarbonisation research. The lecture will include a Q&A session.

The lecture series is made possible by a donation from Dr Peter Thompson, an alumnus and valued supporter of the University who worked as a solicitor in Hong Kong from 1964 involved with the practice of maritime law, a field in which he is regarded as one of the leading experts in the world.

Dr Sarah Shaw, Reader in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Hull University Business School, said: “Logistics is a strategic enabler in achieving net-zero. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring together industry and academics to understand the latest global decarbonisation logistics research and to debate the challenges, opportunities and actions required for the Humber Region and beyond.

“The logistics sector accounts for around 11-12% of global carbon emissions and supply chain systems as whole account for 30-40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Our supply chains are fundamental in addressing the climate change crisis. Equally supply chains and our logistics activities need to rapidly adapt to support the changing environment.

“At the University of Hull, we are passionate about sustainability, it is embedded in our 2030 strategy. We are home to the pioneering UK Energy Estuary and the Humber Region has been identified by the UK government as one of the biggest emitters of carbon emission in the UK and the second in Europe. Actions here are central to the UK government hitting net zero by 2050. This challenge is our biggest opportunity.”

The lecture will be followed by a regional industry panel discussion, which will apply the international perspective to a regional focus. Panellists will include:

  • Tony Mannix – Strategic Advisor Retail, GXO
  • Simon Green – CEO of Freeport, Humber
  • Claire Hinton – Head of Procurement & Compliance, Groupe Atlantic
  • Adam Fowler –  Senior Decarbonization Officer, Hull City Council
  • Paul Andrews –  Director of Global Energy, Smith & Nephew
  • Lloyd Adkin – Director, The Bio-D Company

The panel discussion will be followed by an action-based workshop to explore the challenges and opportunities supporting and accelerating UK net zero in the Humber. All attendees are invited to participate.

The event starts with registration and networking lunch at 12.30pm followed by the lecture at 1.30pm-2.30pm, the panel discussion at 2.30pm-3.30pm and the workshop 4-5pm. A networking dinner will take place in the evening in the Kingsley Suite, Canham Turner Building at the University of Hull.
