Hull Truck Theatre promises a variety of entertainment this Spring with a rich tapestry of compelling drama, legendary comedy, Oscar nominated film and perfect first introductions to theatre for ages 7+.

Whats on in March

Of Mice and Men (Wednesday 5 – Saturday 22 March) promises to resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds in a gripping tale of friendship and hope. Written by John Steinbeck and Directed by Sarah Brigham, Hull Truck Theatre, Derby Theatre, Octagon Theatre Bolton and Theatre By The Lake join forces to present this classic play.

Of Mice and Men tells the story of Lennie and George - two drifters who embark on one heart-breaking journey. The unlikely best friends are bound together with a shared faith and the ambition to live the Great American Dream. This play is a compelling story laced with tragedy…a must-see production for anyone who has ever tried to pursue a long-held dream.

Sarah Brigham, CEO & Artistic Director at Derby Theatre, said:

"I am thrilled that Derby Theatre is producing this show with our partner venues Bolton Octagon, Theatre by the Lake, and Hull Truck.  We all have a shared vision to create brilliant theatre which provides a great night out for our audience, and an accessible way to step into the world of some iconic and classic stories.

Of Mice and Men is a searing drama with a universal story of friendship and lost hope at the core of it.  Whether this is a book you studied at school, one you've come to in later in life, or one that's been on your list to read forever, our stage version will captivate you and breathe new life into this timeless story!"

Whether you are celebrating ‘Mother’s Day’, International Women’s Day, Single Parents Day or World Theatre Day, we have the perfect night out in March. Funny Stuff (Friday 7 March) will see comedy performer, Sue Ryding in her new show that looks at all the “stuff” we accumulate, hoard and hate to let go of, in this humorous and creative response to grief. Katie Norris: Farm Fatale (Saturday 15 March) will also present her smash-hit critically acclaimed debut solo show to Hull Truck Theatre, as quoted in The Guardian – “Tremendous...Wonderfully batty and unapologetic.” Now with low availability, Mark Steel: The Leopard in My House (Tuesday 25 March) will have audiences laughing and crying but mostly laughing as he shares his battle with throat cancer in his “frankly bonkers” energetic way. Finally, not forgetting the return of the Award-Winning tribute show, Whole Lotta Shakin’ – The Shakin’ Stevens Story (Saturday 29 March). With narrated storyline and rare screen images, get ready for a nostalgic celebration that will take you right back to the 80’s for a night of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

IT's that time once again! As part of their stand-up comedy course with comedian Kevin Precious, our graduates will embark on their first 5-minute sets. Hull Truck Theatre's Comedy Graduates Performance (Wednesday 5 March) is a great opportunity to support a range of new comedians at the start of their comedy journeys at an event compered by a professional comedian. You never know, you may be the first to witness a star of the future.

March sits between two half terms this year, and we know that it can be a quieter time for fun activities to do. We have plenty of entertainment for children of ages 7+, where audiences can support other young people who will boldly take the stage to inspire others to do the same. Ahead of Shakespeare Week this March, The Tempest (Tuesday 11 – Wednesday 12 March) will be presented by RSC First Encounters, once again creating the perfect first introduction for young people aged 7-13 and their families. 975 Days…Probably (Tuesday 18 – Friday 21 March) will navigate the treacherous waters of social hierarchies and academic expectations as Hull Youth Theatre take on the highs and lows of life at school. Not forgetting the courtroom drama that will defend Goldilocks, Peter Pan, Hansel and Gretel as they face off against the crown court for being havoc wreaking criminals in Little Criminals (Saturday 22 March), performed by Hull Truck Youth Theatre Juniors.

Hull Truck Theatre will be screening the best art and independent cinema from around the world once more as the Godber Studio hosts a state-of-the-art screen and sound system streaming live broadcasts in partnership this March with Hull Independent Cinema and National Theatre Live.

Hull Independent Cinema ahead of the Academy Awards Season will present Memoir of a Snail (Thursday 13 March) on the big screen, nominated for ‘Best Animated Feature’ it is a heartfelt and hilarious chronicle of the life of an outsider finding her confidence and silver linings amongst the clutter of everyday life. Queer (Saturday 1 March) will also be hosted by HIC and promises to be a sensuous 1950s romance of desire and longing, featuring a deeply moving and mesmeric central performance from Daniel Craig. Three-time Olivier Award-winner Sharon D Clarke is joined by Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who; Sex Education) in the joyful reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest (Thursday 6 March). Don’t miss this recorded screening and not a live, on-stage performance from NT Live.

For adults wanting to do something different this March, why not join Hull Truck Theatre’s Associate, Tom Saunders at First Thursday Theatre Club – Introduction to Adaptation (Thursday 6 March), for an exploration of stage adaption and how you may take an existing story, fable or book and think about transforming it into a piece of live entertainment.

Experience a Live Music Broadcast Up Close as you step inside the world of live music television with Honey Box Live (Thursday 27 March). As the production team capture every moment in real time, you won’t just be watching a gig—you’ll be part of the show.
