Embark on a magical journey on The Bewonderment Machine at Scunthorpe’s free family fun day

10 September 2024

Children will be able to re-wild their imaginations and climb aboard a magical cycle-powered carousel in Scunthorpe town centre later this month.

Green Future Day Scunthorpe

The Bewonderment Machine, which features hand carved woodland animals, puppetry and music, is the centrepiece of this year’s free Green Future event, which returns to Scunthorpe on Saturday 14 September, from 11am to 4pm.

The family fun day is packed full of hands-on experiences that inspire us to care about nature and consider how we can all contribute to making our corner of the planet cleaner and greener.

Families will also have the chance to meet Mother Nature and her hilarious squirrel sidekick, with prizes for those that join her quest to recycle and make the world a more beautiful place.

The fun day brings North Lincolnshire’s Council free summer events programme in Scunthorpe to a close.

Hundreds of families have taken part in free Wonderful Wednesday activities every week on Scunthorpe High Street. There was even the chance to explore a mobile cave!

Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment and strategy, said: “last year’s Green Future event was a great success, with families queuing up for the chance to step inside an enormous inflatable whale. This year we’re bringing even more incredible activities to Scunthorpe town centre, including an amazing cycle-powered carousel.

“As well as being a great way to have fun, these activities encourage all of us, and especially our young people, to consider how the simple actions we take can have a positive impact on the environment – whether that is striving to recycle more or caring for the habitats that surround us.”

A Green Future is North Lincolnshire Council’s ambitious environmental pledge, underpinned by a commitment to achieve net zero by 2030.

With electric vehicle purchases on the rise across the area, residents attending the event will have the opportunity to see the vehicles up close and learn more about making the switch, thanks to Pentagon Scunthorpe.

It comes after the council has launched a new look website, with residents invited to suggest locations for chargepoints – further helping to slash emissions.

Other eco-themed activities on offer at the Green Future fun day include the chance to make a motor with Colder Volts, with DN Colleges inspiring youngsters to craft ‘Sustainabees’ using wooden pegs and pipe cleaners.

Children will also love the activities in The Dancing Tiger Scrapstore’s immersive play area – built with recycled materials!

Joining the action-packed line-up is Coritani Creative, who make a welcome return to the high street with their energetic Taiko drumming, and there’ll be delicious vegan cakes and bakes from Keadby Confectionery to refuel on.
