It’s the weekend, and unusually, there’s not a bank holiday in sight. For another couple of weeks anyway. This last week, we’ve been doing a lot of things, including following the council shifts after the local elections on the 4th of May. Did your local council change hands?

There’s always something going on around the Humber, big or small, and we are delighted to be able to share as much of this with you as we can. Here are 5 stories that you may or may not have seen this week. 

Renewable energy for the win! 

Making the national news this week is that wind power has overtaken gas as a source of electricity in the UK this last quarter. Thanks to projects around the UK including those by Orsted and RWE in the North Sea off the East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire coasts, wind power has grown to being 32.4% of energy generation nationwide. This is an important milestone in making our grid cleaner and greener.

Eco-friendly in Barton 

Talking of making things more eco-friendly, it’s great to see this community group in Barton-on-Humber taking the environment into consideration when planning their facilities. Thanks to funds provided by North Lincolnshire Council Community Grant scheme, the National Lottery Community Fund and Barton upon Humber Lions, the group now have an eco-friendly loo they can use when tending their allotments, and they look delighted with it.

It’s Eurovision time 

It’s the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend. They’re being held in Liverpool but did you know that the UK’s first ever entry was a lady from the Humber? Patricia Bredin was born and raised in Hull and she had a career as a singer on the stage before being chosen as the UK’s entry to the popular singing contest in 1957. The Netherlands won but it wasn’t all bad – Patricia followed up with a good career on stage and screen and then married a Canadian millionaire. I think I heard on BBC Radio Humberside that she was a very close friend of Elizabeth Taylor. Will you be watching the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday?

run, Phoebe, run! 

Ex-Malet Lambert School student Phoebe Gawthorpe is running 11 marathons in 11 days to support Dove House Hospice and Cancer Research UK. She has smashed her target of raising £700 and is currently on over £7,000. Amazing! Her 11 day stint finishes this weekend. Good luck and well done, Phoebe.
